Mother Blessing Ceremonies
What is a Mother Blessing?
Also called a Blessingway, the term is borrowed from Native American rites blessing the passage from one stage of life to another. A Mother Blessing ceremony is a highly personalized ceremony to bless the woman's path to motherhood, whether it is her first child or her tenth. This is different from a baby shower in that the focus is the mother and honoring her as a woman, not on gifts.
I create Mother Blessing ceremonies for a cost of $50. This typically covers some of the supplies I bring, and participants are asked to bring other supplies and food to share.
Many activities can take place at mother blessings.
These include, but are not limited to:
Burning a sage smudge to create a sacred space
Crowning the mother with flowers
Inviting the "energy" of each attendee's mother into the space by speaking the names of women who have walked this path before
Creating birth art for the mother, such as prayer flags
Creating a bead necklace or bracelet for the mother
Inviting the mother to name her fears or hopes for the birth, and writing empowering statements to address these feelings
Creating a birth altar
Carving candles
A foot or hand bath and massage for the mother
Henna artwork for the mother's belly or for guests
Belly casting or belly cast painting
Joining the participants together with yarn bracelets or anklets to wear until baby arrives
Sharing delicious food
Really, a Mother Blessing can take any form the mother wishes it to take. It may sound a little "hippy" or "touchy-feely" for some moms, but it doesn't have to be, and it doesn't have to include any of the things I listed above. These are just some options that I have experienced. This is a beautiful way to really focus on the mother and her feelings, hopes, and fears, and to truly pamper her. For more information, see the Mother Blessing article on the Research/Articles page of this website.
